Local SEO for Multi-Location Businesses
Local SEO ranking comes down to three broad factors: relevance (does your profile match the query), distance (proximity to the searcher), and prominence (reviews, citations, and overall web authority). You can influence two of those directly; distance you can only work around through service-area configuration and physical location strategy.
Google Business Profile: the highest-leverage asset
Categories determine which searches you're eligible for β primary category matters most, and most profiles are set once and never revisited. Services and attributes add relevance signals for specific queries. Photos correlate with engagement, and genuine recent photos outperform stock imagery. Posts and Q&A β the Q&A section is public and, left unmanaged, gets answered by strangers. Hours accuracy, including holiday hours, affects both ranking and user trust.
Citations and NAP consistency
Your Name, Address and Phone must match exactly everywhere they appear. Inconsistency β an old suite number, a former phone number β is one of the most common invisible causes of local underperformance.
Reviews
Volume, recency, and response rate all matter. Build review requests into your existing customer workflow rather than running occasional campaigns. Never purchase reviews: platforms detect it, and the penalty outweighs any short-term gain.
Location pages at scale β the hard part
This is where multi-location businesses most often fail. Publishing fifty location pages that differ only by city name is precisely the pattern quality systems are built to detect.
Each location page needs at least some of: - Genuinely local content β a local landmark, a real service-area description, local staff - Location-specific reviews or testimonials - Embedded map and correct LocalBusiness schema for that specific address - Locally relevant service variations, where they genuinely exist
If you can't write something genuinely different for a location, publishing that page anyway is worse than not publishing it.
Service-area businesses
If you travel to customers rather than receiving them, configure a service area rather than a storefront address, and be realistic about radius β overstating it dilutes relevance without adding reach.
