Technical SEO: The Complete Reference

Technical SEO is the work of making a site crawlable, indexable, fast and machine-understandable. In practice it means five things, in roughly this priority order: fix what blocks crawling, fix what blocks indexing, fix what slows rendering, add structured data, then monitor for regression.

SECTION 01

1. Crawling

Googlebot has a finite budget for your site. Waste it and important pages go uncrawled. - robots.txt β€” check what you're blocking, and confirm your CDN isn't blocking more - XML sitemaps β€” include only indexable, canonical URLs; a sitemap full of redirects and 404s reduces trust in the whole file - Internal linking β€” orphaned pages with no internal links are frequently never found - Crawl traps β€” faceted navigation, calendars and session parameters can generate effectively infinite URLs

SECTION 02

2. Indexation

Being crawled isn't being indexed. - Canonical tags β€” every page should self-reference unless deliberately consolidating - noindex usage β€” audit what's excluded; accidental noindex on template-level pages is common and catastrophic - Duplicate content β€” parameter URLs, print versions, staging environments left crawlable - Thin pages β€” pages with no genuine value dilute site quality signals

SECTION 03

3. Rendering and performance

  • [+]Core Web Vitals β€” LCP (loading), INP (interactivity), CLS (visual stability)
  • [+]JavaScript rendering β€” verify what Googlebot actually sees; client-side-only content is a frequent, invisible failure
  • [+]Image delivery β€” modern formats, correct sizing, lazy loading below the fold
  • [+]Third-party scripts β€” usually the largest single performance cost on established sites
SECTION 04

4. Structured data

  • [+]Organization sitewide, Service on service pages, LocalBusiness on location pages
  • [+]FAQPage wherever genuine Q&A exists
  • [+]Article with named authorship on guides and research Structured data helps both classic rich results and AI extraction β€” see our GEO guide.
SECTION 05

5. International and multi-market

If you serve more than one country, hreflang is technical SEO's highest-stakes area. See our dedicated hreflang guide.

SECTION 06

6. Monitoring

Technical SEO regresses. Every deploy is a chance to reintroduce a fixed problem. Ongoing monitoring β€” index coverage, Core Web Vitals, crawl stats β€” is what keeps gains permanent.
